Christian versus Remnant Believers

This is an article written by a local Christian, Linda Harbin, cautioning us to make major turns back to the simple Jesus, simple Gospel, and simple Church that our Lord entrusted to us when He said, “Occupy until I come.”
The article came from a conversation Linda and I were having last week. I was shocked that she has the same convictions from the Lord that I had in these areas.  The Lord had commanded me to preach about returning back to Him and his simplicity and how foundational home churches are in His return; but other pastors and Christians who follow them have rejected and persecuted the messages. Therefore, I asked Linda, “How do you know these things!?”

Linda’s reply was heart-wrenching … “Because that’s how it all started!”

I asked, “Would you write what you have just said to me?” So, she did! It is titled “Remnant Believers”.

Christian versus Remnant Believers

By Linda Harbin

As of this year, 2025, I’ve been a Christian for 40 years. I’ve always called myself a “Christian.” However, in the past few years, I’ve started noticing a disturbing trend in “Christianity”.

Many call themselves Christians and in retrospect, rightfully so. Afterall, the actual meaning of Christian is “follower of Christ”.  However, have you noticed other religious sects also refer to themselves as “Christian(s)”?

Allow me to elaborate.

These cults call themselves Christians:

  • Jehovah’s Witnesses – They reject the concept of an immortal soul, reject the trinity, and to them it is believed and taught that Jesus is subordinate to God, not God.

  • Mormons – They equate Satan and Jesus as brothers, reject the Trinity, and hold sacred to a rather sketchy book which has since been proven to be an outright hoax due to Joseph Smith’s concocted geography, flora, and fauna, and a litany of other proven lies.

  • Catholics – They engage and indulge in forbidden behaviors such as idolatry (the worship and prayer to Mary and other deceased human beings), transubstantiation (which, without realizing the seriousness of that teaching, could be considered “spiritually” a level of spiritual engagement similar to cannibalism), and they believe their Pope is infallible (very close to being like God) even though their organization delves deep into and condones homosexuality, lesbianism, and covering up sordid acts against children.

The following mainline churchgoers, I personally know, refer to themselves as Christians, yet they ordain homosexuals and lesbians in direct opposition of Biblical teaching, namely Romans 1

  • Some sects of The American Baptist churches
  • Some sects of The Lutheran churches
  • One sect of The Methodist churches
  • Some sects of The Episcopal churches
  • Some sects of The Presbyterian churches

During my research, I also discovered something rather interesting, yet quite disturbing. When asking a simple question while making conversation with a variety of people, “Do you believe Christians love the LGBTQ+ community”, the overwhelming response is “NO. They hate us. Christians are such hypocrites”.  With the influence of TV, media, movies and music, Satan has managed to meld and associate hate with Christianity. Slowly, yet almost assuredly, hatred and Christianity have become near synonymous, even though it seems a majority of mainline churches now align themselves with this community.

Forty years ago, when I repented and literally bolted down a church aisle desperate to get saved, I called myself a Christian. It was traditional. I was a “new Christian believer”.  But in the last few years, I ceased calling myself a Christian and started calling myself a Remnant Believer. Thus, the subject line of this article Christian vs. Remnant Believer. I no longer desired to equate myself with being a ‘Christian’ due to the exceedingly high numbers of religious sects and cults who also identify as Christian(s), yet some or all their doctrine and behavior are reprehensible.

I detest the thought of being grouped with haters and hypocrites. I’ve never hated anyone in my life! Well… that’s not exactly true. I hate Satan and his pack of miserable demons but I’m certain God doesn’t object.  The concept of a “remnant” appears frequently in the Old Testament, often referring to a faithful group of people preserved by God despite widespread judgment or apostasy.

2 Thessalonians 2:3 warns us that a Great Apostasy must occur before the return of Christ. It doesn’t take rocket science to look at the current state of the world to see apostasy unfolding before our eyes. Mainline churches are careening off the rails into dangerous waters by not only condoning abominable behavior but encouraging it. Keep in mind, one cannot ‘fall away’ from something if you were never there to begin with, thus I’m referring to the mainline churches falling fast and hard into apostasy, not the cults. Cults never had the truth to begin with.

The future of true Remnant believers is risky business. Jesus said in Matthew 10:22 that we will be hated by all for His Name’s sake. Do you see this happening? I do. All around the world, Remnant Believers are persecuted and slaughtered. So far in America, we are blessed. We don’t see this kind of persecution. Yet. We aren’t dying for our faith. But be of no illusion. It will come to us eventually.

We will not escape deadly persecution. When real persecution comes and it becomes illegal to gather, where will we go? Sunday services in a church building may very well become illegal. Believers will be scattered and scared. Souls who have been sitting on a church pew for the last 30 years because going to church is the right thing to do, will they withstand persecution, or fall away? It’s one thing to say, “I’m a Christian” and another matter entirely to actively live and breath Christ. If faced with actually dying for your faith, Do you have that mindset? Can you persevere? Only you can answer that question and having to answer that question may come a lot sooner than you think.

What is the answer then? If a majority of the mainline churches are teaching heresy and leading their flock into a ditch then what is my hope for fellowship? Teaching? Pastoral guidance? The answer lies within the Word of God. Let’s look at the pattern of the early church believers. They started as small, intimate groups of like-minded believers in Christ meeting in homes of fellow believers. As more people repented and accepted salvation and the size of the groups swelled, the meetings had to either break up into smaller groups in order to accommodate the numbers or they had to move into larger facilities. Rather than staying in smaller, more manageable groups, the trend turned into starting a church. Today, we seem to have a dichotomy of either small, struggling churches with Pastors who are overworked, underpaid, and stretched to their limit or we have mega-churches whose Pastors suffer the same fate.  The answer then, my fellow Remnant Believer, is to return to the beginning and meet in small intimate groups again. As persecution persists, we’re headed for underground. The underground church in Iran, China, Saudi Arabia, and many other countries is significant. They are forced to meet in small groups since it’s entirely illegal to gather in the first place. Larger groups draw unwanted attention. Drawing attention can mean death. It’s the ONLY way they can fellowship, receive teaching, and Pastoral council and guidance. We too are headed in this direction. It is inevitable.

Start gathering together in small groups. Start a home fellowship. Learn to fellowship in smaller numbers. Gather with other Remnant Believers of like-mind.  If you’re in a mainline church teaching heresy, get out now while you still can. If you stay, you will most assuredly fall into their heresy and eventually be part of the Great Apostasy. Don’t risk your salvation based on what others will think or say of you if you leave. Label yourself what you will but first and foremost, be a true Remnant Believer.

In Christ’s Name,

Linda Harbin

Comment From Minister Clark:

As you read this heart-felt exhortation, remember that Jesus has (personally) given His structure for protecting Christians from the Apostasy. You MUST have a pastor (someone Jesus trusts to train your spirit in His kingdom ways and watch over your soul from the attacks of the enemy). Usurping the authority structure that Jesus set up will make you into small groups of Christians doing your own doctrines — which lands you just as apostate as others (Ephesians 4:11-16, Titus 1:5, 1 Corinthians 7:17). Pray in the authority of Jesus’ name, for God to choose and send you pastors chosen by God to establish home churches. Don’t be just a fellowship group — it’s dangerous and out of alignment with Jesus’ Gospel pattern.

Also, may I add to this wonderful article that I did some “in person face-to-face research” and learned that there is not ALL Methodists, but one sect of Methodists. Linda changed it above from Methodists to “One sect of”. Thanks Linda!

The Lord Jesus is frightening in His movements and timing, and hilarious in the ways that He chooses to answer our questions. AFTER you wrote this article Linda, I was led by the Lord on yesterday (Sunday, May 4th) to visit Summit Baptist Church on Overland to encourage and strengthen some pastoral staff.

There are no coincidences. It was an American Baptist Church and shock of shocks, the sermon was on God’s plan for sexuality.

The Pastor, Brian Merz, presented the most amazing lesson/sermon on the holiness of the human body “for the Lord” and the sacredness of marriage (I’m going to ask if there is a media recording :)).

I, “truly”, cannot remember ever having heard it laid out so thoroughly and attention-holding, including God’s design for one man and one woman in marriage. After greeting him at the end of the message, I made mention that a guest article was just written and the person was lamenting that American Baptists had departed from God’s will concerning sexuality … but that his sermon proves they have not. He explained that “It is a yes and no answer. The American Baptist denomination leaves each local church autonomous and Summit does NOT follow with some of the others.”

This Divine Appointment, being sent to hear the sermon by a fellow-preacher, Pastor Brian Merz, provided the needed understanding we all wanted from your great article, Linda. Thanks again, Linda.
