What Is A “Prophet”?
A prophet is a person, male or female, chosen by Jesus Christ as his “special friend” to whom He tells the secrets of His heart for leading the Church.
This is completly different from a Christian with the “gift of prophecy” recorded in 1 Corinthians chapter twelve for edifying people.
“Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.”
As special friends, prophets are assigned along with apostles the special task of laying the foundation of what Christians must believe, which is communicated to them by revelation from the Lord Jesus Christ.
“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,”
11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. 12 And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; 13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
To fulfill this special work of leading the Church in what Christians must believe, Jesus gives his prophets “a Prophet’s level of authority”. Their office is second in rank of authority — over evangelists, pastors and teaching elders — apostles having first rank (1 Cor 12:28). Prophets are more hated by Satan than other Christians and more fought because their duty includes preserving and defending the foundation of Jesus Christ for all mankind to repent of their sins and obey Him as being God wrapped in flesh.
This is why Jesus stipulates in Matthew 10:40-42:
“… He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward;”
There is no prophet from Jesus Christ (nor apostle) who is not, first, baptized in the Holy Spirit with the initial miracle evidence of speaking in a spiritual language under the almighty power of the Holy Spirit.
